Historic "Best Climate on Earth" identity
A motto coined in 1925 and embodied by the World's Largest Lemon sculpture, erected in 1928 at the town's entrance to promote the region's famous citrus heritage.
Lemon Grove's identity rests on a phrase born in 1925 when merchant Tony Sonka coined the motto "The Best Climate on Earth"—a reference to the Mediterranean climate bringing more than 300 days of sunshine annually to the region. Three years later, in 1928, Lemon Grove's chamber of commerce commissioned architect and artist Alberto Treganza to design a monument celebrating the town's award-winning lemon crops: a 10-foot-long, 3,000-pound sculpture built from timber, chicken wire, plaster and paint by a group of ranchers. The sculpture debuted as a parade float in the 1928 Fiesta de San Diego, and by 1932, businessman Tony Sonka funded a concrete plinth to place it permanently at Broadway and Main Street, where the inscription on the base reads "Best Climate on Earth."
For decades the monument stood as Lemon Grove's signature landmark, a symbol of the agricultural heritage that shaped the area during the late 1800s and early 1900s when the town was a center of citrus cultivation. The Big Lemon, as residents call it, marks the transformation from those orchard days to the suburban residential community that emerged after World War II. In 1995, the sculpture received a Neighborhood Award in San Diego's Onions and Orchids competition, recognizing its continued place in the community's sense of identity and continuity.
The longevity of a symbol like the Big Lemon reflects something important about communities: they ask their residents to think in terms of the long term. A household with a mortgage, children in school, or shared business goals faces years of obligations that would be disrupted by the loss of an income. A term life policy sized to cover those years gives families the security to make the long-term decisions that build neighborhoods and communities.
